Run through every item below before you flip your listing live. This is deliberately comprehensive — better to catch a gap now than after your first order comes in.

How to use this checklist

Work through the sections in order — business and financial readiness first, then product, then listing, then operations. A gap in an earlier section (a missing bank account, an unconfirmed product identifier) tends to block or delay a later one, so fixing issues in sequence avoids rework. Treat any unchecked item as a genuine blocker, not a "nice to have" — each one exists because skipping it is a documented, common failure point for first-time sellers.

Business and financial readiness

  • Business entity registered (or consciously deferred with a plan to formalize) — see Business Formation.
  • Bank account set up and connected to your seller account for payouts.
  • Tax information (EIN or SSN, sales tax registration if applicable) ready for marketplace account setup.

Product readiness

  • Product sourced, received, and quality-checked against your original sample.
  • Product identifiers (UPC/GTIN or marketplace-specific exemption) confirmed.
  • Packaging finalized and compliant with the marketplace's packaging/labeling requirements.

Listing readiness

Operational readiness

  • Fulfillment method selected and tested (a real test order if possible).
  • Return/refund policy set and compliant with the marketplace's requirements.
  • Customer service response plan in place (who answers messages, and how fast).
  • Inventory reorder point calculated so you don't stock out during initial demand.
  • Account health dashboard/monitoring set up for daily checks in the first two weeks.

A note on "consciously deferred" items

A few items on this checklist (most commonly business registration for a very small first test) can be reasonably deferred with a specific plan and timeline to complete them — but "deferred" should mean an actual decision with a date attached, not a gap you haven't thought about. If you can't articulate why an item is safely deferred and when you'll complete it, treat it as required before launch.

What happens if you skip items on this list

Skipping business/financial readiness items risks a delayed or rejected marketplace application, or a payout that can't be processed. Skipping product readiness risks shipping a defective batch to customers. Skipping listing readiness risks a suppressed or poorly converting listing from day one. Skipping operational readiness risks stockouts, missed customer service SLAs, and account health warnings in your first, most fragile weeks — exactly when a new account has the least tolerance for performance issues.

After launch

Once every item above is checked and the listing is live, move to First 30 Days After Launch for what to monitor and realistic early expectations.
