This walkthrough assumes you've already confirmed this product doesn't exist in Walmart's catalog (see How to Determine Whether a Product Already Exists) and have completed account setup (see the full onboarding walkthrough if you haven't). If you're adding many new items at once rather than one, use Full setup's bulk mode instead — see Walmart Item Setup Methods Compared.

Step 1: Start a single-item listing

From Seller Center, go to Catalog → Add items, select Create items, then choose Single item.

🖼️Step 1

If you'd rather not draft the title, description, and key features by hand, Seller Center's built-in AI assistant can generate a first draft from a short description and your product images — select Help me write, review the output carefully (it can make mistakes, and you're responsible for accuracy), then Accept. You can still edit after accepting.

Step 2: Complete the Required to list fields

Fill in the fields marked required. Once that section is complete, Seller Center generates recommended categories automatically in the Categorization section — choose your category, subcategory, and product type, then select a fulfillment option and complete the remaining category-specific attributes. If you're unsure which category fits, check Walmart's content standards; for any individual attribute, the info icon next to it explains what's expected.

🖼️Step 2
The item details and attributes form, showing the Required to list section and the auto-generated Categorization section beneath it.

Your product identifier has to follow Walmart's GTIN/UPC/ISBN/EAN policy. If your product genuinely doesn't have one — common for private-label and handmade goods — select GTIN as the Product ID Type and enter CUSTOM as the identifier. Submitting with CUSTOM automatically generates a GTIN exemption request from the information already on the form; there's no separate exemption application to file.

Step 3: Submit and track status

Once every required field is complete, select Submit. From here you can track the item's status from the Activity Feed in Seller Center — updates can take up to 24 hours, and longer if the system flags a data error that needs extra processing.

🖼️Step 3
The Activity Feed in Seller Center showing a recently submitted item's processing status.

You're responsible for the accuracy of everything submitted, including compliance with any laws, regulations, or licensing requirements that apply to selling, shipping, and delivering the specific product.

Creating similar items faster

Once your first item is live, you don't have to repeat the full form for near-duplicate products. Find the item on the Catalog page, choose Copy item from its Actions dropdown, then update just the Required to list fields that differ — usually the image and one or two attributes — for the new variant.

After submission

Check the Activity Feed within 24 hours to confirm the item went live rather than coming back flagged. If it's stuck in Draft or shows an error, that's typically a required-attribute or data-validation issue rather than a review decision — cross-check the attributes you entered against the category's required fields before resubmitting.
