How this is calculated
Spreads your shipment-level costs (freight, insurance, customs brokerage) across the units in that shipment, adds a duty amount calculated on the goods' FOB value, and adds all of that on top of your unit cost to get one true per-unit landed cost.
Duty is calculated on the FOB goods value (unit cost × quantity) since that's the most common base — some countries and HTS classifications calculate duty on a CIF basis (goods + freight + insurance) instead, so confirm the correct base for your specific HTS code with your customs broker. Freight, insurance, and broker/handling fees are simple per-unit averages across the shipment quantity.
